LeadershipJohn D. Musil, Pharm.D. - President and CEO
Dr. John Musil is the founder, president and CEO of The Apothecary Shops, a family of independent pharmacies located throughout Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Ohio. John began his pharmacy career as a cashier at Lahr’s Pharmacy in Phoenix, Arizona. Always knowing he wanted to be a pharmacist, his studies took him to The University of Arizona where he graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy in 1994. Upon graduation, he took a position as a clinical pharmacist at Georgetown University Medical Center. After working in the Washington, D.C., area for a year, an opportunity became available to be a managing director of a community based pharmacy in Scottsdale, Arizona. After managing the pharmacy for 14 months, the owner made him an offer to purchase the practice, and The Apothecary Shops was born on May 1, 1996. The Apothecary Shops are a recognized leader in the community in providing specialty care. John frequently speaks to medical practitioners on various topics including individualized care pharmacists provide. In 2003, he was recognized by the National Community Pharmacist’s Association as the Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year. The following year he was awarded the Albert B. Prescott Award for Pharmacy Leadership from the American Pharmacist’s Association. He also received the 2004 Pharmacist of the Year award from the Arizona Pharmacy Association. In addition to being a clinical assistant professor at The University of Arizona, College of Pharmacy and an adjunct faculty member at Midwestern University, College of Pharmacy, John is associated with several professional affiliations including American College of Apothecaries, American Society of Reproductive Medicine, American Lung Association, Arizona Pharmacy Association, International Association of Compounding Pharmacists, Young Entrepreneur’s Organization, Scottsdale Healthcare System and the American Liver Foundation of Arizona. John resides in Scottsdale with his wife, Caroline, and their four children; Grant, Grace, Nicholson and Emmeline.
Hamilton Baiden joined The Apothecary Shops, a family of independent pharmacies located throughout Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Ohio., in March 2005 to spearhead the company’s sales and marketing efforts. A highly motivated sales professional with more than 15 years of varied pharmaceutical and biotech sales experience, Hamilton brings strong motivational and sales-relationship building qualities to The Apothecary Shops’ team. Baiden started his pharmaceutical career in 1992 at Sanofi Winthrop Pharmaceuticals in Philadelphia, PA. In 1997, after various positions in office, hospital, and oncology sales, he joined Serono Laboratories, Inc. as a HIV Clinical Consultant. Baiden was promoted to a Corporate Account Manager for the Eastern United States early in 1998 where he was responsible for calling on Managed Care, Medicaid and National Specialty Pharmacy accounts. In 1999, he moved to San Diego, CA to become the National Account Manager, Western United States. Here he was responsible for distribution of the companies Biotech products. In 2001, he was awarded The Council of Excellence Award as The National Account Manager of the Year. Immediately prior to joining The Apothecary Shops, Hamilton was responsible for helping to manage the distribution and sales of several major Biotech Pharmaceutical Products for MedImmune, Inc. At MedImmune, he was a recipient of the prestigious CEO Award and was named the 2004 National Account Manager of the Year. Hamilton and his wife live in Scottsdale with their three daughters and dog. He is an active athlete and has completed two marathons.
Dr. Nathan Downhour earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in Tucson, Ariz., in 2000. He graduated summa cum laude and was a member of The Rho Chi National Honor Society. His post-graduate education has included certification in pain management and immunizations, as well as training and research in men’s health and infectious diseases. After graduation, Nathan performed his pharmacy practice residency with Clarian Health in Indianapolis, with clinical rotations in internal medicine, infectious disease, administration, nutrition, organ and bone marrow transplants, trauma, pediatric ICU and drug information. In July 2001, Nathan joined The Apothecary Shops, a family of independent pharmacies located throughout Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Ohio. In 2005, after serving three years as Pharmacy Director for the Scottsdale/91st Street location, he was promoted to Vice President, Pharmacy Operations. His major roles in this position are overseeing daily operations for all Apothecary Shops and developing strategies for company growth and expansion. He has written articles for professional journals on topics such as severe cellulitis/ myositis and the perceived value and outcomes of residency projects. Licensed in Arizona and Indiana, Nathan is a member of the American Pharmacist’s Association and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and a member and fellow of FACA. Nathan serves as co-director of the pharmacy’s residency program. He frequently lectures to patient-focused support groups on topics such as liver transplants, pain and podiatry issues. Nathan and his wife live in Scottsdale with their twin boys.
Stephen Calcagno joined The Apothecary Shops, a family of independent, community pharmacies located throughout Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Ohio, in October 2005. After serving two years as the company’s Controller, he was promoted to Vice President, Finance and IT. In this role, Steve is in charge of the company’s IT department as well as being responsible for directing financial operations for all 14 pharmacies. His professional background includes 18 years in finance. Steve began his financial career in 1991 at American National Can in Chicago, IL. He has since held various finance and accounting positions with increased responsibilities at two additional companies. Immediately prior to joining The Apothecary Shops, Steve worked at Fender Musical Instruments, Inc. in Scottsdale, AZ. There he served as Director of Cost Accounting for three years and was responsible for directing financial operations for three manufacturing facilities. |
